You Never Know

The other day, my brother and I ran a Spartan Beast Race (Officially +13.1 (more like 14.5) miles and 30 obstacles) at Mountain Creek. This race lives up to the venue’s name as there was a lot of climbing up and down the mountain. The same day, about three hours before our race, the Spartan Ultra started on the same course. Racers in the Ultra had to run two of the Beast course laps with an extra four-mile section and a few extra obstacles.

When we were about 10 miles and three and a half hours into our race, we were climbing the obstacle called the 8” ft wall. A competitor from the ultra passed us at the wall and kept going. My brother and I looked at each other in awe as this was the competitors’ second lap. She had completed 26 miles of the grueling course in under six and a half hours while we only completed 10 miles in half the time. This athlete was exhausted but strong, in control, and moving forward. Her technique was on point, and she was not complaining about the challenges that she faced or the ones that remained. Her mental strength was incredible. I want to use her mental strength as a model to achieve.

I do not know who the athlete is, but I want to be more like her. I am sure she did not enter the race to become someone else’s role model, but she became mine for mental strength.

Every day is an interview.

You never know who is watching, and more importantly, who is learning from you.
