Standards #10: Leaving the Standard Higher Than You Found It

Everyday Is an Interview

Standards are not static.
They are inherited, upheld, or improved.

Every role you step into comes with an existing standard. It may be strong. It may be inconsistent. It may be unclear. But it exists.

The question is not what you inherit.
The question is what you do with it.

Professionals do not simply maintain standards. They elevate them. They look for gaps. They close them. They bring clarity where there was confusion and consistency where there was drift.

This is not about making change for the sake of change. It is about strengthening what matters. It is about ensuring that the next person who steps into the role starts from a higher place than you did.

Raising the standard requires effort. It requires discipline. It requires the willingness to do the hard work that others may have avoided.

It also requires courage. Elevating expectations can create resistance. It can challenge comfort. But over time, it builds trust, performance, and pride in the work.

Every day is an interview.
Your legacy is not the position you held. It is the standard you leave behind.

“Do not just meet the standard. Leave it higher than you found it.”
