Everyday Is an Interview
Want to know what an organization truly values?
Look at what it recognizes.
Recognition is more than saying thank you. It is one of the most powerful ways leaders communicate what matters.
When you recognize someone for helping a colleague, you reinforce teamwork.
When you acknowledge someone who took responsibility for a mistake and corrected it, you reinforce accountability.
When you celebrate someone who went the extra mile for a customer, student, colleague, or organization, you reinforce service.
What gets recognized gets noticed.
And what gets noticed often gets repeated.
Recognition does not need to be elaborate. In fact, some of the most meaningful recognition costs nothing.
A handwritten note.
A quick email.
A sincere thank you in the hallway.
Giving someone credit during a meeting.
Telling another leader about the great work someone on your team is doing.
The key is being specific. “Great job” feels good. Telling someone exactly what they did and why it mattered teaches them, and everyone around them, what the organization values.
There is another side to this.
If only major accomplishments receive attention, the quiet professionals doing excellent work every day can become invisible. Culture depends on those people too.
Look beyond the spotlight.
Recognize consistency. Recognize improvement. Recognize professionalism. Recognize the person who stepped in when nobody asked.
Culture is built daily.
Every time you recognize the behavior you want repeated, you reinforce the culture you want to build.
Every day is an interview.
“Recognition does more than reward behavior. It teaches everyone what the culture values.”
