Culture #2: Meetings Reveal Culture

Everyday Is an Interview

If you want to understand an organization’s culture, don’t read its mission statement.

Attend one meeting.

Within a few minutes, you’ll know far more about the organization than any handbook could ever tell you.

Do people listen to one another?

Do they arrive prepared?

Are different opinions welcomed or dismissed?

Does one person dominate the conversation while everyone else remains silent?

Are problems solved, or are people blamed?

Meetings are a mirror. They reflect the culture that exists every day.

Healthy cultures are easy to recognize. People come prepared because they respect one another’s time. Questions are asked to seek understanding, not to embarrass a colleague. Differences of opinion are handled professionally because everyone shares the same goal: making the organization better.

Unhealthy cultures reveal themselves just as quickly.

People interrupt.

Side conversations become the norm.

The loudest voice wins instead of the best idea.

Some individuals use meetings to gain attention rather than move the work forward.

Professionals understand that every meeting is an opportunity to strengthen culture. They prepare before they arrive. They listen to understand. They contribute with purpose. They disagree respectfully. And when the meeting ends, they support the decisions that were made, even if their recommendation was not selected.

The best meetings leave people with greater clarity, stronger relationships, and renewed confidence in the team.

Every day is an interview.

Every meeting is an opportunity to demonstrate the culture you want others to experience.

“Meetings don’t create culture. They reveal it.”

Culture #1: Culture Is What You Tolerate

Everyday Is an Interview

Walk into any organization, and you’ll quickly hear people describe its culture.

“This is just how we do things here.”

That statement says everything.

Culture is not determined by the words on a website or the posters hanging in the hallway. It is determined by the behaviors that are accepted every day.

What you tolerate becomes your culture.

When respect is expected, people notice.

When accountability is consistent, people notice.

When excellence is recognized, people notice.

Unfortunately, the opposite is also true.

If gossip is ignored, it becomes part of the culture.

If negativity is allowed to spread unchecked, it becomes part of the culture.

If poor performance is accepted while great work goes unnoticed, that becomes the culture.

Culture is built through hundreds of small decisions. Every time a leader chooses to address an issue rather than avoid it, the culture becomes stronger. Every time someone demonstrates integrity when no one is watching, the culture becomes stronger. Every time a teammate steps up to help someone else succeed, the culture becomes stronger.

Strong cultures are intentional.

They are protected by people who understand that standards, habits, and leadership matter.

Every day is an interview.

The culture you experience tomorrow is being built by the decisions you make today.

“Culture is not what you say you value. Culture is what you consistently tolerate.”
