Everyday Is an Interview
You can learn a lot about an organization’s culture by asking a few questions:
Do people feel safe enough to tell the truth?
Can an employee admit a mistake before someone discovers it?
Can a new team member say, “I don’t understand”?
Can someone challenge an idea respectfully without being labeled difficult?
Can a colleague say, “I need help” without worrying that it will be viewed as weakness?
Strong cultures make room for these conversations.
Feeling safe does not mean being comfortable all the time. It does not mean lowering expectations, avoiding accountability, or protecting people from constructive feedback.
In fact, strong cultures often have very high standards.
The difference is that people know they can speak honestly while working to meet them.
When people fear raising concerns, small problems grow.
When people hide mistakes, opportunities to learn disappear.
When people stop asking questions, organizations lose ideas and perspective.
Leaders play an important role in creating this environment. How you respond the first time someone brings you bad news determines whether they will bring you bad news the next time.
Listen before reacting.
Ask questions before assigning blame.
Correct when necessary, but make learning part of the response.
And thank people for having the courage to raise legitimate concerns.
Culture is built daily.
Create a workplace where people are expected to perform at a high level, but also know they can speak up, question, learn, and ask for help.
Every day is an interview.
“A strong culture does not eliminate difficult conversations. It makes people feel safe enough to have them.”
