Everyday Is an Interview
We tend to think culture is built during the big moments.
The opening meeting of the year.
The team retreat.
The celebration.
The crisis.
Those moments matter. But culture isn’t built there.
Culture is built in the small moments.
It is saying good morning when you pass someone in the hallway.
It is asking, “How can I help?” when a colleague is overwhelmed.
It is giving someone credit for a great idea.
It is responding to a mistake with curiosity before criticism.
It is thanking the person whose work often goes unnoticed.
None of these actions requires a strategic plan, a committee, or a budget.
They simply require intention.
Small moments matter because they happen every day. One interaction may seem insignificant, but repeated interactions create patterns. Patterns create expectations. Expectations eventually become culture.
Leaders sometimes search for the next big initiative to improve morale or strengthen their organization. Before adding another program, look at the small moments already happening around you.
How do people greet one another?
How do they respond when someone needs help?
How do leaders react when something goes wrong?
How do people speak about colleagues when those colleagues are not in the room?
The answers will tell you far more about your culture than any survey or slogan.
Culture is built daily.
Do not underestimate your next interaction. It may last only thirty seconds, but it contributes to an environment people experience for years.
Every day is an interview.
“Culture is built in moments so small we often do not realize we are building it.”
